St. Michael’s College
Your home at the University of Toronto
Principal’s Welcome
Welcome to St. Michael’s College (“St. Mike’s”)!
St. Mike’s is a very special community of students, professors, and staff. We are one of the oldest federated colleges in the heart of a world-class university. We boast a rich intellectual history and an illustrious and flourishing alumni base. We are also a beautiful neighbourhood in our own right, located on the peaceful east side of the St. George campus.
St. Mike’s is built on values. We have always known that excellence is part of, rather than separate from, a commitment to the larger human community. We have been proudly supporting academic achievement as a process of exploration, self-discovery, and commitment to social justice since 1852 – and we continuously develop that tradition in response to the challenges and opportunities of the contemporary world.
At St. Mike’s, we know that education and scholarly excellence are about so much more than class averages. We are here to help you recognize and fulfill yourself to the utmost as you ask questions, explore interests, find connections, and apply all this experience – your whole person – to engage with modern society and the common good of all.
Every student comes to university with their own story, enthusiasms, doubts, and ambitions – and St. Mike’s thrives on the energy of its diverse student population. We know that you are here to learn, to ask, and to discover – both inside and outside of the classroom. We also know that the best way to do that is to meet other people, to engage with a community – and to be simultaneously challenged and supported.
We can’t wait to greet you on our beautiful and historic campus. You can find us on the east side of Queen’s Park, just steps away from the Royal Ontario Museum, two subway lines, and a wide variety of local cafes and restaurants. Whether you live in one of our beautiful historic residences or reside off-campus, our many student-facing events, clubs, and spaces are here to make St. Mike’s a home for everyone.
As you stroll around our campus, be sure to take note of the many works of art in the John M. Kelly Library, in our classroom buildings, in Brennan Hall, and in our beautiful gardens. These works, part of the renowned Donovan Art Collection, encapsulate the core of the St. Mike’s academic mission: all humans look for meaning beyond immediate everyday experience. We are here to wonder, explore, and engage in these questions together.
